HIGH-TECH HERITAGE (IM)PERMANENCE OF INNOVATIVE ARCHITECTURE:

Specifics of Buildings Featuring Machinism and High-Tech Aesthetics in Bohemia. Case Study of Harrachov Ski Jumps and Their Possible Reuse

Lenka Popelová, Tomář Ploc

The concept of machinism architecture and later high-tech architecture gradually penetrated countries in the socialist bloc. The non-standard conditions of socialist planning made architects deal with it in a unique and creative way, which was a must. Therefore, we find here a whole scale of manifestations ranging from artistic visions of the 1960s to actual projects and implementations in the 1970s and 1980s, which were burdened by many compromises (e.g., lack of building materials), and by seeking a suitable form. In the Czech environment, which was separated from the theoretical background in the West, the high-tech form was interpreted more freely and could be combined with other aesthetic inputs. High-tech aesthetics became prominent in technical buildings and also in sporting facilities.
